Why R290 is the refrigerant of the future? - A change of mindset in servicing

Miért az R290 a jövő hűtőközege? – Szemléletváltás a szervizelésben

The refrigeration and heat pump systems has undergone a spectacular transformation in recent years. Energy efficiency, environmental pressure reduction and EU regulations are all pointing in the direction of a gradual replacement of the usual fluorinated refrigerants by natural alternatives. One of the most talked about of these is R290, or propane.

Many people still mistrust it, especially from a servicing point of view. R290 is a refrigerant with well-known physical properties and excellent efficiency, but it requires a new approach to repair and maintenance. In this article, we will show why R290 is the future and what this means from a service perspective, with a special focus on the professional approach taken by SMARTAIR.

What is R290 (propane) and why is it the focus of attention?

R290 is a high purity propane used as a refrigerant in heat pumps, liquid chillers and some air conditioning systems. Although it may seem new to many, it is in fact a substance that has been known for decades and has recently taken on a new role.

Why now?

  • Extremely low GWP (Global Warming Potential) value ≈ 3
  • No ozone depleting effect
  • It has excellent thermodynamic properties
  • High energy efficiency also for heat pump plants

EU F-gas regulations set a clear direction: high GWP refrigerants are being phased out. While R410A and partly R32 can be seen as a temporary solution, R290 is a long-term alternative.

R290 vs. „conventional” refrigerants - why is it preferable?

When comparing refrigerants from a truly professional point of view, the R290 clearly comes out on top. In terms of its environmental impact, the difference is dramatic: while R410A has a global warming potential (GWP) of approximately 2088 and R32 approximately 675, R290 has a GWP of only 3. This is a leap of magnitude that clearly shows why propane is considered one of the most future-proof refrigerants for sustainable refrigeration and heat pump systems.

On the technical side:

  • Lower filling weight required
  • It has good heat transfer properties
  • Ensures stable operation even in extreme temperatures
  • High COP value in heat pump mode

It is no coincidence that more and more manufacturers are switching to R290, especially for air-to-water heat pumps and industrial liquid chillers.

Source of fear: the question of flammability

The vast majority of the fears about R290 stem from the issue of flammability. This concern is understandable and professionally justified, but it is important to stress that the real risk is not the refrigerant itself, but the risk of servicing using inappropriate tools and procedures. Indeed, R290 is an A3 refrigerant, which means that it is flammable, but this does not mean that it is banned, but that it is an enhanced safety category with clearly defined technical and health and safety requirements.

If these are met, the risk can be controlled. Problems typically arise where propane systems are attempted using the same approach and methods improve, than a conventional R410A unit. The R290 is not more dangerous, but requires a different approach and this difference must be recognised in order to ensure safe and professional servicing.

A change of mindset in servicing - what does it mean in practice?

R290 systems require knowledgeable, skilled service. This means a change in approach at both the asset and service protocol level.

Adequate tools

  • ATEX-compatible vacuum pumps
  • Explosion-proof extraction
  • Gas detectors
  • Non-sparking hand tools

The lack of these is the reason why many repair shops do not dare to undertake R290 repairs.

Service log

  • Controlled working environment
  • Leak test after each intervention
  • Conscious ventilation and extraction
  • Documented workflows

R290 cannot be learned from a YouTube video. It takes practical knowledge and experience. Many repair shops say no to repairing R290 systems because they lack the necessary training: they lack the right equipment for R290 or the practical experience to handle propane systems.

Many businesses do not want to take a risk with a technology that is different from the norm and that clearly has higher security requirements. This attitude is understandable in some ways, but it does not change the fact that the market is clearly moving towards R290. The real question is therefore no longer whether propane heat pumps and liquid chillers will be mass-produced, but who will be able to repair and maintain them safely and professionally in the long term.

The SMARTAIR team is also equipped to service such equipment: we have both the right tools and the service protocol.

In SMARTAIR's experience, R290 systems:

  • are reliable when properly installed
  • are no more problematic than other systems
  • but require more professional discipline when servicing

Why is SMARTAIR preparing for R290 - and the future?

SMARTAIR's philosophy is simple: we don't learn a technology when it's inevitable - we keep an eye on technological innovations to provide informed answers to our customers' questions. We consider this our professional responsibility.

Therefore:

  • we have the necessary equipment for R290
  • follow international recommendations and standards
  • we have real-world experience with propane systems
  • we do not reject new technology, but are prepared to deal with it

Conclusion: the R290 is not a threat, but an opportunity

The R290:

  • environmentally friendly
  • effective
  • sustainable in the long term
  • and an inevitable part of the refrigeration of the future

The real question is not whether it should be allowed to work, but who can do it professionally. SMARTAIR believes that modern heat pump and refrigeration systems require a modern approach to service. And the R290 is one of the key elements of this new era.

If you have a question about a propane heat pump or liquid chiller, choose a team that's prepared. We look forward to hearing from you!
