Monosplit or multisplit air conditioning - what's the difference

Those who have already installed air conditioning know that it's not just a matter of choosing (well) between brands and performance, but also of choosing the design of the system: monosplit or multisplit air conditioning the better choice?

Is a monosplit or multisplit air conditioner better - Important differences to consider before investing

The two solutions may seem similar at first glance, but there can be significant differences in their operation, cost and the level of comfort they provide. In this article, we will explain the key differences, advantages and disadvantages, and highlight the benefits of the Daikin Multi+ system, which can provide domestic hot water in addition to cooling and heating. This will give you the knowledge you need to monosplit or multisplit air conditioning the better choice.

What is monosplit air conditioning?

A monosplit air conditioning the simplest and most commonly installed solution: one indoor unit and one outdoor unit. This type is ideal if you only want to cool or heat a specific room.

Benefits:

  • Lower investment costs: fewer units, easier installation.
  • Easy operation, repair: a separate outdoor unit for each indoor unit, so that if a malfunction occurs, it does not affect the comfort of the other rooms.
  • Greater efficiency in one room: the system is optimised for the air conditioning of a given space.

Disadvantages:

  • Variety of outdoor units: when multiple monosplit air conditioners are installed, each indoor unit has its own outdoor unit, which is not always aesthetically pleasing, and is also very space-consuming, sometimes not even feasible due to the building's layout.
  • Limited functionality: only cooling/heating can be provided, without additional comfort functions (e.g. domestic hot water).

What is multisplit air conditioning?

A multisplit air conditioning case studyMultiple indoor units (up to 2-5 or more) can be connected to one outdoor unit. In this way, an entire apartment or small office can be air-conditioned via a central system.

Benefits:

  • Aesthetic and space-saving solution: only one outdoor unit is placed on the façade or balcony of the building (this may not only be a space-saving consideration, but may also be subject to legislation, e.g. in the case of a listed building. Government regulation here. ).
  • Flexibility: different indoor units (sidewall, cassette, ceiling) can be combined in one system.

Disadvantages:

  • Higher initial investment: multisplit systems can be more expensive than monosplit solutions
  • More complex installation and maintenance: the pipe network and control are more complex.
  • A single outdoor unit failure can affect several rooms: if the outdoor unit stops working, all indoor units stop working.
  • One mode everywhere: Indoor units cannot be switched to different modes at the same time
  • Noise pollution: the noise exposure of the outdoor unit may be higher.

Monosplit or multisplit air conditioner - which should I choose?

The monosplit or multisplit air conditioning question is worth considering:

  • Apartment size and layout: for a smaller apartment or a single room, a monosplit air conditioner may be the right choice. For air conditioning several rooms, a multisplit air conditioner is more practical.
  • Budget: monosplit is cheaper, but installing more outdoor units can be problematic. Multisplit is more expensive, but more convenient and aesthetically pleasing in the long run.
  • Long-term aspects: A limited number of indoor units can be connected to the multisplit air conditioners, so it is not possible to expand the system later.

Daikin Multi+ - a single system for hot water and air conditioning

A Daikin Multi+ system is a special air conditioning and heat pump solution developed by Daikin, a Japanese company renowned for its precision. This system combines the flexibility of multisplit air-conditioning a the possibility of producing domestic hot water (DHW).

The Daikin Multi+ is a from outdoor unit and more from indoor unit similar to classic multisplit air conditioners. The special feature is that can be connected directly to a 90 litre or 120 litre hot water tank (Daikin Multi+ tank). The outdoor unit as an air-to-air heat pump works.

So a single heat pump system can:

  • Refrigerate in the summer,
  • To heat in the transition and winter period,
  • Domestic hot water (DHW) all year round.

Benefits of the Daikin Multi+ system:

  • If HMV is needed, the system Switch to to heat the hot water tank.
  • The HMV storage also has a built-in electric heating element, which safety back-up in the event of a reduction in heat pump performance in extreme cold.
  • The control priorities for example, if you are making hot water, you can temporarily reduce the cooling capacity of the air conditioners.
  • 3-in-1 system: cooling, heating and hot water - with a single outdoor unit.
  • Space-saving: The heat pump does not need a separate outdoor unit.
  • Energy efficient: uses heat extracted from the air, so it consumes much less than an electric water heater.
  • Flexible: up to 2-3 indoor air conditioners can be connected Smarter control: can be controlled remotely with Daikin Onecta.

Limitations to be taken into account for Daikin Multi 3

Of course, as with all building services systems, there are advantages and disadvantages to be aware of before deciding on a Daikin Multi+ system.

  • Max. 3 indoor units can be connected to it (not suitable for very large flats/ houses).
  • The HMV tank size (90 or 120 litres) is ideal for smaller households (2-4 people).
  • If there is more than one demand at the same time (e.g. all air conditioners running + hot water being produced), the system manage priorities, so it does not always give 100% comfort in all functions.
  • Usually worth it for new installations really, because space and investment costs can be saved.

To whom does SMARTAIR recommend the Multi+ system?

We recommend its installation in apartments or small family houses where:

  • limited space is an outdoor unit,
  • heating would basically be solved by air conditioning,
  • no high hot water demand (e.g. you don't need 200 litres of water at a time for bathing).
  • environmentally friendly and energy efficient for those who like solutions.

Monosplit or multisplit air conditioner - choose carefully

A monosplit air conditioning ideal for single room air conditioning, with lower investment costs and easy installation. A multisplit air conditioning offers a comfortable, aesthetic and energy-efficient solution for cooling and heating multiple rooms from a single outdoor unit.

However, if you are planning for the long term with a complex solution, you should think about Daikin Multi+ system, which not only controls the temperature, but also the hot water supply. A single state-of-the-art system can thus provide total comfort and complete convenience in the home.
