How does a heat pump work? - Guide and Daikin solutions

Hőszivattyú beltéri és kültéri egység

Sustainable energy sources and energy-saving solutions are playing an increasingly important role in modern homes. The heat pump is one of the most popular alternatives, as it can help reduce energy bills and protect the environment at the same time. In this article, we explain how heat pumps work, what types they are and why you should choose Daikin heat pumps.

What is a heat pump and why is it important to know about it?

A heat pump is a device that converts heat energy from the environment (air, water, soil) to heat, cool and produce domestic hot water. This allows a single system to perform several functions and significantly reduces energy consumption.

How does a heat pump work? - Simple explanation

A heat pump works on the basis of the natural flow of heat. The system is able to transfer heat from one place to another, whether it is needed for heating or cooling.

The heat pump duty cycle

  • Heat absorption: The outdoor unit's refrigerant absorbs ambient heat.
  • Compression: The condensation of the refrigerant increases the temperature.
  • Heat dissipation: The indoor unit transfers the heat to the heating system (e.g. underfloor heating, radiator).
  • Expansion: As the pressure drops, the refrigerant cools down and the process starts again.

What are the benefits of using a heat pump?

The benefits of a heat pump include a number of factors that make the investment worthwhile in the long term.

  • Energy efficiency: It uses up to 75% less energy than conventional systems.
  • Sustainability: It uses renewable energy sources.
  • Versatility: You can heat, cool and produce hot water with a single system.
  • Convenience and automation: It can also be controlled via smart controls and a mobile app.
  • Value-adding effect: Increases the market value of the property.

Types of Daikin heat pumps

A Daikin is one of the world's leading heat pump manufacturers, continuously improving its products for maximum efficiency and user experience. As engineers and building services technicians, we choose Daikin because we have experienced their impeccable quality over many years, as evidenced by the feedback from many satisfied customers.

1. Daikin air-to-water heat pumps

The most common type, which transfers heat from the outside air to the water-based heating system. Ideal for detached houses. A Daikin Altherma series is one of the most popular choices in Hungary.

Air-to-water heat pumps transfer energy from the outside air into the house. The outdoor unit exchanges heat with the outdoor air and, through the cooling cycle, delivers energy at a higher (or lower) temperature to heat (or cool) the space and produce domestic hot water. It is the easiest to install in the whole of Europe.

Did you know?

The Daikin Altherma 4 H ECH2O unit uses a DHW tank (300 l or 500 l) and can be connected to a solar collector.

Low temperature air-water pumps

Daikin Altherma low-temperature heat pumps for efficient cooling, heating and domestic hot water supply in new build homes.

They are ideal for heating systems with, for example, underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators, low heat loss and good insulation. They are recommended for those who want to optimise energy efficiency and running costs.

Medium temperature air-water pumps

Medium-temperature air-to-water heat pumps are an ideal replacement for your old gas boilers and offer a renewable solution for cooling, heating and domestic hot water.

Medium-temperature heat pumps are systems that are not only suitable for low-temperature heating (e.g. underfloor heating), but can also provide, for example, higher water temperatures (e.g. ~55-60 °C) at lower outdoor temperatures. These systems are a good compromise between low temperature and high temperature systems: they can be combined with a radiator if maximum temperature is not always required.

High temperature air-water pumps

Daikin's high temperature air-to-water heat pumps are specifically designed to upgrade old radiator heating systems. These units can produce up to 70-80 °C flow water temperature, eliminating the need to replace the entire heating system. It is an ideal choice for homes where existing radiators are retained but the owner wishes to upgrade to an environmentally friendly, energy efficient solution. High efficiency and Daikin's reliable technology ensure comfort and low running costs.

 2. Daikin air-to-air heat pumps

Also known as split air conditioners, they heat or cool the air in the room directly. A fast and flexible solution for homes and offices.

The Daikin Multi+ system an air-conditioning system that can connect several indoor units to a single outdoor unit, allowing simultaneous heating or cooling of several rooms or even hot water production.

3. Daikin geothermal heat pumps

Heat stored in the soil or groundwater is recovered. They are more expensive to install, but are the most efficient solution in the long term, can be more efficient on cold winter days and are more usable in the longer term.

A geothermal heat pumps:

  • horizontal collector systems, where pipes are laid in the upper layers of the soil (1-2.5 m deep) and scattered,
  • vertical drilled borehole systems, where holes are drilled in the ground up to 15-120 m deep and the pipes are placed in them,
  • groundwater recovery, if there is an aquifer, or thermal water can be used in certain places.

Why choose a Daikin heat pump?

You already understand how a heat pump works, now let's see why you should choose a Daikin heat pump:

  • Reliable Japanese technology: Decades of experience and innovation.
  • Energy efficiency: Extremely high COP (coefficient of performance).
  • SmartPilot: Remote monitoring and application management (Onecta).
  • Environmentally friendly refrigerant: Reduced environmental impact.
  • Wide choice: There is an optimal solution for every home.
  • Fast spare parts supply: In the event of a breakdown, parts can be replaced quickly, arriving in 1-2 days, which is important during the heating season.
  • Quiet operation: Daikin heat pumps are much quieter than many other brands.
